The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) has launched the 101st edition of its renowned Handbook, a beloved and respected guide for amateur radio enthusiasts worldwide. For nearly a century, the ARRL Handbook has been the go-to source for anyone interested in the art and science of radio technology, growing to over 1,200 pages packed with knowledge for everyone—from seasoned operators to curious newcomers.

This year’s edition marks an exciting new chapter, with Gregory D. Lapin, Ph.D., PE, N9GL, stepping in as editor. Lapin, together with a talented team of radio experts, has put a fresh spin on the Handbook, bringing it in tune with today’s evolving technology landscape. Key updates include reimagined sections on radio fundamentals, transmission lines, setting up a station, and best practices for safety. Here’s a glimpse of what’s new:

  • Practical tips on using affordable tools for electromagnetic analysis, circuit modeling, and antenna testing.

  • A revamped section on transmitter and receiver modeling.

  • A new guide on prepping your station for emergency situations—because being ready is part of the hobby!

  • Detailed insights into designing antennas and receivers for radio astronomy.

  • A section dedicated to battery safety and maintenance.

  • Updates on SWR meters and testing essentials.

  • The latest on FCC safety rules for RF exposure.

In addition, this 101st edition includes a bonus e-book download that makes finding information a breeze. The download features the full Handbook in a searchable digital format, plus extras like software, PC board templates, and more handy tools.

Gregory Lapin shared his personal connection to the Handbook, recalling his first copy years ago: “The first Handbook I owned was only half the size of the current edition, and I never read it cover to cover. Over the years, it’s always been a trusted reference on my bookshelf, and I hope the 101st edition will serve the community in the same way, advancing our hobby into the future” (ARRL News).

You can pick up the 101st ARRL Handbook as either a softcover book or in a six-volume set, each priced at $69.95. Orders can be made through the ARRL Store, your local ARRL dealer, or by calling ARRL Publication Sales at (860) 594-0200, or toll-free within the U.S. at (888) 277-5289.
